Jesus Is Greater

A Study Guide for Holding Fast to Faith in Christ

1. Introduction: The Supremacy of Christ

  • Written to Jewish believers tempted to return to old religious systems under pressure and persecution.

  • Author is unknown, but the message is clear: Don’t go back—Jesus is better.

  • Hebrews connects Old Testament symbols to their New Covenant fulfillment in Christ.

Reflection: When you’re tempted to fall back into comfort or tradition, remember who Jesus truly is.

2. Jesus Is Greater Than the Prophets and Angels (Hebrews 1–2)

  • God spoke through the prophets—but now speaks through His Son, the exact imprint of His nature (Hebrews 1:1–3).

  • Jesus is greater than angels—He became human to suffer and die for us (Hebrews 2:9).

  • Because He suffered, He can help those who suffer.

Takeaway: Jesus isn’t just a messenger—He’s the message.

3. Jesus Is Greater Than Moses and the Law (Hebrews 3–4)

  • Moses was a faithful servant; Jesus is the Son over God’s house (Hebrews 3:5–6).

  • The Israelites failed to enter God’s rest because of unbelief.

  • Today, that rest is available through faith in Christ.

Lesson: Don’t harden your heart—God’s rest isn’t found in religion, but in relationship.

4. Jesus Is Our Great High Priest (Hebrews 5–7)

  • Jesus sympathizes with our weakness and intercedes for us (Hebrews 4:14–16).

  • He’s a priest not from the line of Levi, but like Melchizedek—eternal and righteous.

  • Earthly priests died; Jesus lives forever.

Truth: You don’t need to go through a human priest. Jesus is your perfect mediator—always available, always able.

5. A Better Covenant, A Better Sacrifice (Hebrews 8–10)

  • The Old Covenant was a shadow; Jesus established a better one through His blood (Hebrews 8:6–13).

  • Animal sacrifices had to be repeated—Jesus offered one perfect sacrifice for all time (Hebrews 10:10–14).

  • Because of this, we can boldly enter God’s presence (Hebrews 10:19–22).

Reminder: You are not forgiven because you tried harder—you are forgiven because Jesus died once for all.

6. Faith That Endures (Hebrews 11)

  • Known as the “Hall of Faith”—Abel, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Rahab, and others trusted God against all odds.

  • They didn’t receive the full promise—but lived by faith.

  • Faith is the assurance of things hoped for (Hebrews 11:1).

Encouragement: Faith isn’t proven by ease—it’s proven by endurance.

7. Run the Race with Perseverance (Hebrews 12–13)

  • Fix your eyes on Jesus—the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:1–2).

  • God disciplines those He loves—it’s a sign of being His child.

  • Chapter 13 gives practical instructions for Christian living, community, and worship.

Challenge: Don’t give up. Others have run before you. Jesus leads the way. Keep going.
