A Call to Return
A Study Guide for Rekindling Faith, Honor, and Hope
1. Introduction: Who Was Malachi and Why This Message Matters
Malachi means “my messenger.”
Written after the return from exile, around 450–430 BC, likely during Nehemiah’s time.
The temple had been rebuilt, but worship had become lazy, corrupt, and heartless.
Malachi delivers six disputes between God and His people, each starting with a question or accusation.
Reflection: Religious activity can exist even when true worship is absent. God cares about the heart behind the ritual.
2. “How Have You Loved Us?” (Malachi 1:1–5)
God begins by declaring His love—but the people question it.
He reminds them of His covenant faithfulness to Jacob over Esau.
The message: God’s love is not always measured by comfort, but by His eternal purpose.
Takeaway: When you doubt God’s love, look to His faithfulness, not your feelings.
3. Dishonoring God in Worship (Malachi 1:6–2:9)
The priests are offering blemished sacrifices—treating worship as routine and God as common.
God rebukes them: “Where is My honor?”
Their failure to lead in holiness is poisoning the people.
Lesson: Worship that costs nothing honors nothing. God deserves our best, not our leftovers.
4. Faithlessness in Marriage and Covenant (Malachi 2:10–16)
The people are marrying idol-worshippers and breaking their marriage vows.
God calls this treachery, reminding them He was a witness to their covenant.
Key verse: “I hate divorce” (2:16)—a reflection of how seriously God takes relational faithfulness.
Truth: Your spiritual life and personal life are deeply connected—how you treat others reflects how you honor God.
5. “Where Is the God of Justice?” (Malachi 2:17–3:6)
The people accuse God of blessing the wicked and ignoring injustice.
God promises to send a messenger (John the Baptist) to prepare the way for the Lord.
The Lord will come like a refiner’s fire to purify His people.
Hope: God will bring justice—but on His terms, and we must be ready.
6. Robbing God (Malachi 3:7–12)
The people are withholding tithes and offerings.
God says they are robbing Him—not because He needs their money, but because they’ve lost reverence and trust.
He invites them to “test Him” and see if He won’t pour out blessing.
Reminder: Giving isn’t about money—it’s about faith, honor, and gratitude.
7. Arrogance vs. Remembrance (Malachi 3:13–4:3)
Some claim it’s “vain to serve God”—that the wicked prosper and obedience is pointless.
But a remnant fears the Lord and speaks often of Him.
God promises they are written in His book—and they will be spared on the day of judgment.
Encouragement: God sees those who fear Him, even when the world mocks or ignores them.
8. A Final Warning and Promise (Malachi 4:4–6)
The book closes by pointing back to Moses and the law, and forward to Elijah—who will come before the great and terrible day of the Lord.
This points to John the Baptist and ultimately Jesus, the coming King.
After this: 400 years of silence—until the voice crying in the wilderness.
Gospel Thread: Malachi ends with both warning and hope—calling God’s people to prepare their hearts for the Messiah.
