SERMON OUTLINE

God Keeps His Promises
Theme: Victory comes through trust and obedience
Primary Scripture: Joshua 1:9
“Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

BIG IDEA (THREAD THROUGH THE ENTIRE READING)

God’s promises do not fail —
but they are experienced through trust and obedience, not passivity.

From Moses’ final words to Israel’s first victories in the land, Scripture makes one truth clear:
What God promised, He now fulfills.

1) GOD REAFFIRMS HIS PROMISE BEFORE THE TRANSITION

(Deuteronomy 30–31)

  • Moses calls Israel to choose life and obedience
  • God assures them He will not abandon them
  • Leadership changes, but God does not
  • God prepares His people emotionally and spiritually for what’s next

Key truth:
God’s promises are not tied to one leader — they rest on Him alone.

2) GOD’S FAITHFULNESS STANDS EVEN AT THE END OF A LIFE

(Deuteronomy 32–34)

  • Moses recounts God’s faithfulness and Israel’s failures
  • God allows Moses to see the land, though he will not enter
  • God fulfills His word exactly as spoken
  • Even unfinished assignments do not cancel God’s promises

Key insight:
God’s plan is bigger than any one person.

3) GOD CALLS HIS PEOPLE TO COURAGEOUS OBEDIENCE

(Joshua 1)

  • Joshua is commissioned as leader
  • God commands strength and courage
  • Obedience to God’s Word is emphasized repeatedly
  • God’s presence is the source of confidence

Key truth (primary scripture connection):
Courage flows from trusting God’s promises, not human strength.

4) GOD MAKES A WAY FOR HIS PROMISE TO MOVE FORWARD

(Joshua 2–4)

  • God prepares the land before Israel arrives
  • Rahab’s faith shows God’s mercy and sovereignty
  • The Jordan River is crossed by God’s power
  • God establishes remembrance through memorial stones

Key insight:
When God fulfills His promises, He also builds reminders of His faithfulness.

5) GOD REQUIRES OBEDIENCE BEFORE VICTORY

(Joshua 5–8)

  • Israel must consecrate themselves
  • Obedience precedes conquest
  • Jericho falls by God’s power, not military strategy
  • Disobedience brings temporary defeat at Ai

Key warning:
God’s promises do not excuse disobedience — they require it.

6) GOD FULFILLS HIS PROMISE DESPITE HUMAN WEAKNESS

(Joshua 9–11)

  • Israel makes mistakes
  • God continues to give victory
  • God fights for His people
  • The land is subdued as promised

Key truth:
God’s faithfulness is greater than human imperfection.

7) GOD COMPLETES WHAT HE PROMISED

(Joshua 12–15)

  • The victories are recorded
  • The land is divided
  • God’s word proves true in detail
  • The promise given generations earlier is realized

Key declaration:
What God promised, He delivered — fully and faithfully.

CLOSING TRUTH

God does not forget His promises.
He does not delay without purpose.
He does not fail.

Victory does not come through strength alone —
it comes through trust and obedience.

And when God calls His people forward,
He goes with them.

God keeps His promises.
