Introduction — John 8:32

Truth sets us free; foolishness always leads to bondage. Five idiotic biblical decisions we still repeat today — none of the five set out to be a cautionary tale.

1. Believing the Serpent Over God — Genesis 3:1-6

Satan convinced, didn’t force. Questioned God’s goodness, offered self-definition. Cross-refs: 2 Corinthians 11:3 (same cunning still works), Matthew 4:4 (Jesus, the second Adam, trusts the written word where Eve trusted her own judgment).

2. Running from God’s Call — Jonah 1:1-3

Jonah ran from fear, pride, and preference. Contrast: Isaiah 6:8, Here am I, send me. Psalm 139:7-10 — running from God is theologically pointless. Rebellion is self-funded; obedience is God-funded. The storm was mercy, not punishment. Nineveh’s fate hung on Jonah’s obedience.

3. Letting Delilah In — Judges 16:15-20

Strong calling, weak boundaries. Contrast: Genesis 39:12, Joseph flees Potiphar’s wife. Cross-refs: 1 Corinthians 10:12 (thinking you stand), James 1:14-15 (desire conceives sin), 2 Timothy 2:22 (flee, don’t manage). Compromise doesn’t announce itself.

4. Lying to the Holy Spirit — Acts 5:1-11

Giving was voluntary; the sin was the lie, not the withholding. Contrast: Acts 4:36-37, Barnabas’s genuine generosity in the verses right before. Cross-refs: Isaiah 29:13 and Matthew 6:1 — lips honor, hearts far, performance over God. God prefers an honest sinner to a dishonest worshiper.

5. Rejecting Jesus While Standing Right in Front of Him — John 18:38-40

The crowd chose Barabbas over an innocent Messiah. Cross-refs: Isaiah 53:3 and John 1:11 (rejection foretold and realized), Acts 3:14-15 (Peter later confronts the same crowd, then offers forgiveness). Every sin kept over surrender is choosing Barabbas again.

Conclusion & Response

Faithful choice was always available alongside the foolish one — Jesus/Eve, Joseph/Samson, Barnabas/Ananias. You don’t fix foolishness with information — you fix it with surrender.
