What Jesus Was Really Saying Without Saying a Word

The same God who wrote the Law in stone now kneels in the dust to write again—not to condemn, but to redeem.

I. The Trap — A Setup in the Temple (John 8:2–6)

• Jesus is teaching when the Pharisees interrupt, dragging in a woman caught in adultery.
• Their goal isn’t justice—it’s to trap Jesus using Scripture as a weapon.
• Jesus kneels and says nothing, exposing their motives.

II. The Silence — Jesus Writes in the Dirt (John 8:6–8)

• Instead of speaking, Jesus stoops down and writes with His finger.
• This act echoes Exodus 31:18 and Daniel 5:5—God writing in stone and on a wall.
• Jesus is declaring: “I am the One who gave the Law—and I am writing again.”

III. The Verdict — Let the Sinless Throw the First Stone (John 8:7–9)

• Jesus says, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone.”
• One by one, from oldest to youngest, they walk away.
• When confronted by divine authority, self-righteousness crumbles.

IV. The Grace — Neither Do I Condemn You (John 8:10–11)

• Jesus does not excuse her sin—but He does not condemn her either.
• He offers forgiveness and commands repentance: “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
• John 3:17 — “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save it.”

V. The Reveal — The God Who Writes Redeems

• God wrote the Law in stone—judgment.
• Jesus writes in dirt—mercy mingled with judgment.
• The Law shows us our sin. Jesus deals with it.
• 2 Corinthians 3:3 — He now writes on our hearts by His Spirit.
