SERMON OUTLINE
God Looks at the Heart
Theme: God’s calling is based on character, not appearance
Primary Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:7
“For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
BIG IDEA (THREAD THROUGH THE ENTIRE READING)
God does not choose leaders the way people do.
He does not prioritize strength, image, popularity, or position.
He looks at the heart — and that changes everything.
1) EXTERNAL SUCCESS CANNOT REPLACE INTERNAL OBEDIENCE
(1 Samuel 13–15)
- Saul begins with promise but lacks submission
- He offers unauthorized sacrifice
- He partially obeys God’s command
- Saul values appearance over obedience
Key truth:
Partial obedience reveals a divided heart.
2) GOD REJECTS APPEARANCE-BASED LEADERSHIP
(1 Samuel 16)
- God sends Samuel to anoint a new king
- Jesse presents impressive sons
- God rejects outward strength and stature
- David is chosen based on heart, not resume
Primary Scripture emphasis:
God’s standard has always been internal, not external.
3) FAITH IN GOD STANDS WHEN OTHERS SHRINK BACK
(1 Samuel 17)
- Goliath intimidates Israel
- Saul and the army fear
- David trusts God’s faithfulness
- Victory comes through confidence in God, not armor
Key insight:
Faith is rooted in remembering who God is, not fearing who stands before you.
4) A RIGHT HEART DOES NOT GUARANTEE AN EASY PATH
(1 Samuel 18–20)
- David is praised, then pursued
- Saul becomes jealous and paranoid
- David honors Saul despite mistreatment
- Character is tested in pressure
Key truth:
Being chosen by God does not exempt someone from suffering.
5) GOD REFINES THE HEART THROUGH WAITING AND HUMILITY
(1 Samuel 21–24)
- David lives as a fugitive
- Opportunities for revenge arise
- David refuses to harm God’s anointed
- Integrity matters even when no one is watching
Key insight:
The heart is shaped most deeply in hidden seasons.
6) A CORRUPTED HEART LEADS TO SPIRITUAL COLLAPSE
(1 Samuel 25–31)
- Saul rejects God’s voice
- He seeks forbidden guidance
- His reign ends in tragedy
- External authority collapses without internal faithfulness
Key warning:
Ignoring God hardens the heart and leads to ruin.
CLOSING TRUTH
God does not measure worth by visibility.
He does not choose based on image.
He does not call according to human standards.
He looks at the heart.
Because obedience matters more than sacrifice.
Faithfulness matters more than popularity.
Character matters more than position.
And when God calls,
He is not looking for the strongest —
He is looking for the faithful.
God looks at the heart.
