Discipleship is not about a label—it’s about a life.
I. Introduction — Discipleship Isn’t a Title, It’s a Trademark
Luke 6:40 – “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.”
• Jesus didn’t call us to make churchgoers—but disciples.
• A disciple is a follower, a learner, and a reproducing servant of Christ.
• The goal is not information—it is likeness to Christ.
II. Trait 1: Obedience to Christ
John 14:15 – “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
• Obedience is not about earning salvation—it’s the response of a surrendered heart.
• Love for Jesus is proven by submission to His Word.
• Obedience motivated by love is different from obedience motivated by fear.
• Questions to consider:
◦ Are there areas where you’ve said “no” to Jesus?
◦ Are you obeying Him in every part of your life—or just the comfortable parts?
III. Trait 2: Love for Others
John 13:35 – “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
• Love is the visible evidence of discipleship.
• Love isn’t passive—it forgives, serves, speaks truth, and sacrifices.
• Most of us love selectively; discipleship calls us to love broadly.
• Questions to consider:
◦ Who are you withholding love from?
◦ Is your love selective, or does it reflect Jesus?
IV. Trait 3: Denial of Self
Luke 9:23 – “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
• The world says “Follow your heart.” Jesus says “Deny it.”
• You can’t follow Jesus and stay in control—discipleship requires surrender.
• Most of us have made a partial surrender; discipleship doesn’t allow for locked rooms.
• Questions to consider:
◦ What areas of your life are still off-limits to God?
◦ Who’s really on the throne—you or Jesus?
V. Trait 4: Faithfulness in Trials
James 1:12 – “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
• Trials don’t destroy faith—they reveal it.
• Faithfulness in adversity proves what your foundation is really built on.
• Easy worship is not the same as steadfast worship.
• Questions to consider:
◦ Do you stay faithful when the answer is “no”?
◦ Is your worship consistent—or only loud when life is easy?
VI. Trait 5: Fruitful Living
John 15:8 – “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”
• Fruit is not optional—it is the visible result of abiding in Christ.
Galatians 5:22–23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
• These qualities cannot be faked indefinitely—they are Spirit-produced, not self-produced.
• The fruit question is really a connection question.
• Questions to consider:
◦ What kind of fruit is your life producing?
◦ Where are you growing—and where are you stagnant?
VII. Trait 6: Reproduction of Disciples
Matthew 28:19–20 – “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
• Discipleship doesn’t end with you—it multiplies through you.
• The Great Commission is for every believer, not just professional ministers.
• The church has trained consumers of discipleship; we need producers.
• The people in your life are not accidents—they are part of your assignment.
• Questions to consider:
◦ Who are you investing in spiritually?
◦ Is anyone growing in their walk with Christ because of your presence in their life?
VIII. Conclusion — Fan or Follower?
Matthew 16:15 – “But what about you? Who do you say I am?”
• A believer acknowledges who Jesus is. A disciple follows Him—at cost, in love, in obedience, in fruit, and in replication.
• A fan admires Jesus from a distance. A follower is marked by Him in every area of life.
• Challenge:
◦ Examine your heart honestly.
◦ Ask God where you’ve stopped short of full discipleship.
◦ Surrender what you’ve been holding back.
“The world doesn’t need more Christians in name. It needs true disciples in motion.”
