From the Garden to the Empty Tomb

Opening — The Story Didn’t Start at the Cross

  • Most people think the story of Jesus begins at the cross.
  • The cross is the turning point — not the beginning.

To understand the resurrection we must go back to the beginning.

Genesis 2:8
“The Lord God planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.”

God created a world that was:

  • ordered
  • peaceful
  • full of life
  • without death

Genesis 1:31
“God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.”

No suffering
No death
No sin

Humanity walked with God.

But that world did not last.

Genesis 3 changed everything.

The Fall — When Death Entered the World

Humanity chose rebellion over obedience.

Genesis 3:6
Adam and Eve disobey God.

Sin enters the human story.

Romans 5:12
“Through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned.”

Consequences of sin:

  • separation from God
  • corruption of creation
  • death

Genesis 3:19
“For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

From that moment forward every graveyard tells the same story.

Humanity cannot escape death.

But God Promised a Reversal

Even in the middle of the Fall, God spoke hope.

Genesis 3:15
“I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.”

First promise of a Savior.

A descendant would come.

  • The serpent would wound Him
  • But He would crush the serpent

The rest of the Bible moves toward that promise.

The Cross — The Serpent Strikes

Jesus arrives.

He teaches with authority
He heals
He casts out demons
He declares the kingdom of God

But then the cross.

Luke 23:46
“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”

Jesus dies.

Disciples scatter
Hope seems buried

Matthew 27:63–64
The tomb is sealed and guarded.

From a human perspective:

Evil appears to have won.

The serpent struck.

The Resurrection — The Serpent Is Defeated

But the story does not end at the cross.

Luke 24:1–3
The women arrive at the tomb.

The stone is rolled away.

Luke 24:6
“He isn’t here, but is risen.”

Genesis 3:15 begins to unfold.

The serpent bruised His heel
But Christ crushed the serpent’s head.

Hebrews 2:14
“That through death he might bring to nothing him who had the power of death, that is, the devil.”

1 Corinthians 15:54–55
“Death is swallowed up in victory. Death, where is your sting?”

Death itself has been defeated.

Jesus Is the Second Adam

The resurrection begins a new humanity.

1 Corinthians 15:21–22
“For since death came by man, the resurrection of the dead also came by man.”

Two representatives:

Adam → death
Christ → life

Romans 5:18–19
Adam’s disobedience → condemnation
Christ’s obedience → justification

1 Corinthians 15:45
“The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”

What Adam lost, Christ begins restoring.

The Resurrection Begins the Restoration of Creation

The resurrection is bigger than personal salvation.

Creation itself was affected by the Fall.

Romans 8:20–22
Creation groans under the curse.

But Christ’s resurrection is the beginning of restoration.

1 Corinthians 15:20
Christ is the first fruits of resurrection.

Revelation 21:4
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more.”

The empty tomb is the first sign that Genesis 3 will one day be undone.

Where That Leaves Us

Every person stands in one of two realities.

Adam or Christ.

Romans 5:18
Through Adam → condemnation
Through Christ → justification of life

1 Corinthians 15:22
“As in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.”

One man brought death.

One man brings life.

Closing — From Garden to Garden

The Bible begins in a garden where humanity lost life.

The resurrection happened in a garden where life returned.

John 19:41
“Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden.”

Not an accident.

A sign.

God has begun reversing the Fall.

The empty tomb proves death does not get the final word.

Salvation Invitation

The resurrection is not just about Jesus.

It is about what God offers us.

John 3:16
God gave His Son so we could have eternal life.

The cross paid for sin.

The resurrection proved the payment was accepted.

Romans 10:9–10
Confess Jesus as Lord
Believe God raised Him from the dead
→ you will be saved

Romans 10:13
“For whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Whoever.

The story that began in a garden where life was lost
now offers life again through Christ.

And that invitation is still open today.
