Text: Luke 8:26–33 (focus on 8:31)
Theme: Knowing who Jesus is is not the same as surrendering to Him.

Recognition of Jesus does not equal relationship with Jesus.
Even demons believe—but they do not submit in repentance.

1) THEY RECOGNIZED JESUS IMMEDIATELY

(Luke 8:28)

“He cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, ‘What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?’”

  • No introduction needed
  • No teaching required
  • No convincing necessary

They knew exactly who He was.

Truth:
There are people sitting in churches who know about Jesus…
but don’t actually belong to Him.

James 2:19 says
“You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!”

Connection:
Knowledge is not salvation.
Recognition is not surrender.

2) THEY FEARED JESUS—BUT NOT IN A SAVING WAY

(Luke 8:28)

“I beg you, do not torment me.”

  • They feared His power
  • They feared His authority
  • They feared judgment

But they did not love Him…
They did not worship Him…
They did not repent before Him

Truth:
There is a fear that leads to repentance…
and there is a fear that only wants relief.

2 Corinthians 7:10
“For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation… whereas worldly grief produces death.”

Connection:
A lot of people want relief from consequences…
but not transformation of the heart.

3) THEY BEGGED JESUS—BUT FOR THE WRONG THING

(Luke 8:31)

“They begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss.”

Let that sink in…

They begged Jesus…
but not for mercy
not for forgiveness
not for restoration

They begged for less judgment

Truth:
It is possible to cry out to Jesus and still not want Him.

People pray:

  • “Fix my situation”
  • “Remove my pain”
  • “Get me out of this mess”

But never:
“Change my heart”
“Forgive my sin”
“Make me yours”

Connection:
The demons begged…
but they never repented.

4) JESUS HAS AUTHORITY—WHETHER YOU SUBMIT OR NOT

(Luke 8:32–33)

  • They could not move without His permission
  • They could not resist His command
  • They could not escape His authority

Truth:
Jesus is Lord whether you acknowledge Him or not.

Philippians 2:10–11
“So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…”

The difference is this:
Some bow now in surrender…
Others will bow later in judgment

5) THE CONTRAST: DEMONS VS THE DELIVERED MAN

(Luke 8:35, 38–39)

The man who was possessed:

  • Sitting at Jesus’ feet
  • Clothed
  • In his right mind

And what does he do?

“He begged that he might be with him…”

Notice the contrast:

  • Demons begged to avoid judgment
  • The man begged to follow Jesus

That’s the difference.

One wants escape…
The other wants Jesus

6) THE DANGEROUS PLACE: CLOSE TO JESUS—BUT UNCHANGED

This is where it gets real.

There are people who:

  • Hear about Jesus
  • Talk about Jesus
  • Even pray to Jesus

…but are still unchanged

They don’t want the abyss…
but they also don’t want surrender

Truth:
You can be close to Jesus…
and still not belong to Him

Matthew 7:22–23
“Lord, Lord, did we not…?”
“I never knew you.”

7) THE CALL: DON’T JUST BEG—REPENT

The demons begged…
but they didn’t turn

The man was delivered…
and he followed

That’s the dividing line.

Acts 3:19
“Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.”

CLOSING FLOW

This moment in Luke 8 forces a question:

When you come to Jesus… what are you actually asking for?

  • Relief?
  • Escape?
  • Help?

Or Him?

Because even demons recognize Him…
even demons fear Him…
even demons cry out to Him…

But they will never repent.

And the warning is this:

Don’t come to Jesus just to avoid consequences…
Come to Jesus to be changed.
