PRIMARY TEXT: 2 Timothy 4:1–5
SUPPORTING: Luke 13:3 | Ephesians 4:15 | John 16:8 | 1 John 1:9 | Hebrews 10:25 | Matthew 28:19 | Romans 3:23 | Romans 6:23
CENTRAL TRUTH: When conviction disappears, urgency disappears with it — and when urgency disappears, people stop acting like eternity is real.
KEY LINE: “The Gospel wounds before it heals, convicts before it comforts, and calls us to die before it promises us life.”
OPENING
• Nobody likes being corrected — but Scripture is full of calls to repentance
• Jesus / John the Baptist / Peter / Paul / Holy Spirit — all preached conviction
• 2 Timothy 4:1–5 — charge to preach, reprove, rebuke, exhort; people will not endure sound teaching
POINT 1 — The Gospel Offends Before It Heals
• Jesus was not in the comfort business — Luke 13:3, John 6, rich young ruler, whitewashed tombs
• Truth forces a response — some followed, many walked away, He let them go
• The Gospel begins with bad news so the good news can land with full weight
POINT 2 — Malice vs. Truth
• Ephesians 4:15 — speaking the truth in love; both, always together
• Truth without love = brutality; love without truth = empty sentimentality
• The doctor illustration — silence isn’t kindness when the diagnosis is serious
POINT 3 — Conviction Is a Gift
• John 16:8 — Holy Spirit convicts of sin, righteousness, judgment
• Conviction draws toward God; condemnation drives away — know the difference
• 1 John 1:9 — confession leads to forgiveness and cleansing
POINT 4 — The Drift Is the Enemy’s Strategy
• Hebrews 10:25 — do not neglect the gathering; written down for a reason
• Sunday weddings, funerals, reunions, community events — no bad intent required
• The enemy just needs a good enough reason to keep you out of the room where conviction happens
• Dates get chosen; Sunday is a choice; the drift is quiet, slow, and deliberate on the enemy’s part
POINT 5 — If We Actually Believed It, We’d Act Like It
• Matthew 28:19 — Go. Active commission, not passive invitation.
• Bible giveaways, community events, tracts, grocery store conversations — we are saving lives
• Hospital room illustration — someone given days to live; told “don’t push stuff on him”
• That window is a gift not everyone gets — the first question is DO YOU KNOW JESUS
• One foot in, one foot out — this is the moment for urgency to land
CLOSING — Borrow the Perspective of Someone Who Ran Out of Time
• The 30-year-old with cancer, the 6-year-old with leukemia, the young mother with an aneurysm
• What do they know now that we are still pretending we have time to figure out?
• Romans 3:23; 6:23 — all have sinned; wages is death; free gift is life in Christ
• Clear Gospel call to the lost: Repent. Believe. Surrender.
• Pivot to believers: who in your life needs to hear this? A name. A face. Stop waiting.
• 1 Peter 2:9 — royal priesthood; not a compliment, a job description
• Romans 10:14 — how will they hear without someone telling them?
• Revelation 20:10, 14–15 — lake of fire, forever and ever; anyone not in the book of life
• Hell is real, eternal, permanent — same word used for eternal life used for eternal punishment
• Once they are gone the window closes forever — no prayer reaches across that line
• Stop letting fear of offense be louder than the reality of where they are headed
• The cross says something is wrong. The empty tomb says it can be made right. Go tell people. Now.
