Sermon Notes / Outline

I. START WHERE WE LEFT OFF

Last week:

  • Death is not defeat.
  • Eternal life cannot be interrupted.
  • We do not panic because our hope is secure.

Natural Question:
If that is true… what exactly is eternal life?
What is heaven actually like?

Many have vague ideas.
Jesus spoke concretely.

II. HEAVEN IS NOT LESS REAL — IT IS MORE REAL

Misconception:
Earth = reality
Heaven = abstract

Scripture:

Hebrews 11:10
“…the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.”

Revelation 21:2
“The holy city… prepared…”

John 14:2–3
“I go to prepare a place for you…”

Key Truth:
Heaven is designed, prepared, structured.

Romans 8:21
Creation will be set free from corruption.

Application:
If this fallen world reflects glory, heaven reflects glory without decay.

III. HEAVEN IS THE PRESENCE OF JESUS

Centerpiece: Presence, not architecture.

2 Corinthians 5:8
“…away from the body and at home with the Lord.”

Philippians 1:23
“…to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.”

Revelation 22:4
“They will see his face.”

1 Corinthians 13:12
“Now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.”

Key Truth:
Heaven is heaven because Jesus is there.

IV. WHAT JESUS TOLD US ABOUT HEAVEN

1. Conscious existence

Luke 23:43
“Today you will be with me in paradise.”

Immediate presence. Not delay.

2. Relational recognition

Matthew 17 (Transfiguration)
Moses and Elijah recognizable.

1 Thessalonians 4:17
“We will always be with the Lord.”

Identity continues — perfected.

3. Joy beyond comparison

Revelation 21:4
“No more death… mourning… crying… pain…”

Psalm 16:11
“In your presence there is fullness of joy.”

4. Restored creation

Romans 8:21
Creation set free from corruption.

Revelation 21–22
City, nations, river, tree of life.

Key Truth:
Heaven is restored reality, not abstract existence.

V. WHAT WILL NOT BE THERE

Revelation 21:4
No more death.

Revelation 21:27
Nothing unclean enters.

Absent:

  • Sin
  • Temptation
  • Pride
  • Anxiety
  • Spiritual warfare
  • Corruption

Key Truth:
The things that exhaust us now will not follow us there.

VI. WILL WE REMEMBER THIS LIFE?

Continuity suggested.

Luke 24:39
Resurrected Jesus recognized.

1 Corinthians 15
Raised imperishable — transformed, not erased.

Isaiah 65:17
Former things will not dominate or distress.

Key Truth:
Heaven does not erase identity. It redeems memory.

VII. WHAT WILL WE DO?

Revelation 22:3
“His servants will worship him.”

2 Timothy 2:12
“We will also reign with him.”

Genesis 2 principle — work existed before sin.

Key Truth:
Heaven is meaningful existence without decay.

Purpose without frustration.
Service without rivalry.

VIII. WHY THIS MATTERS NOW

Colossians 3:2
“Set your minds on things that are above.”

2 Corinthians 4:18
“What is seen is transient…”

If heaven is real:

  • Panic shrinks
  • Greed weakens
  • Fear fades
  • Loss is reframed

Principle:
Clear eternity produces steady living.

IX. FINAL LANDING

This world feels permanent.
Scripture says it is temporary.

Heaven feels distant.
Scripture says it is eternal.

2 Corinthians 4:18
Revelation 22:4
1 Corinthians 13:12

At the center:
Not scenery.
Not structure.
Jesus.

When we see Him:
Faith becomes sight.
Hope becomes reality.
Fear disappears.
